The Science of Muscle Testing
In Theta Healing® we use muscle testing, which uses your body’s electrical system and muscles, to help us find deeply held subconscious beliefs that are holding us back from realizing our dreams, goals and aspirations, or are simply making us feel icky.
The human body is a bioelectrical system after all. Our cells are specialized to conduct electrical currents. Electricity is required for the nervous system to send signals throughout the body and to the brain, making it possible for us to move, think and feel. Therefore it’s possible to use those electrical pathways to tap into our deeper feelings and the beliefs we hold.
Simply stated, Muscle Testing allows access to the belief systems held in your subconscious mind.
Think of your subconscious mind as a garden where beliefs take root- some flowers are blooming beautifully, while others might be weeds that need careful tending. Together, we’ll explore this inner landscape to help you cultivate the life you truly desire.
How Does Muscle Testing Work?
Typically, when we say or think something that the subconscious mind experiences as true, the electrical and magnetic fields around the body actually become stronger and as a result the muscles also react more strongly. Where as, when we say or think something that the subconscious mind experiences as false, the electrical and magnetic fields around the body actually become weaker and as a result the muscles in your circuit also react more weakly. For example, if your name is Marie, and you state “My name is Marie”, this will align as true with the subconscious mind, and your field and your muscles will test strong. Likewise, if your name is Marie, and you state “My name is Sally”, this will align as false with the subconscious mind, and your field and your muscles will test weak.
There are several ways to perform muscle testing however I find it easiest to create a closed circuit by pressing the tips of your thumb and middle fingers together to make a loop. Then we establish our yes and no by asking questions with known answers as stated above and trying to separate the finger and thumb. Typically when the circuit stays strongly closed it indicates yes and when it breaks apart it indicates no. As you answer questions about your subconscious beliefs, your subconscious mind then generates and projects either a positive energy or negative into that electrical circuit depending on whether the answer is yes or no and that my friend is what helps us get to the deep hidden roots of your issues.

Why Is Muscle Testing Used in ThetaHealing?
Simply stated, to access your subconscious mind, specifically, the belief systems held in your subconscious mind. The truth is that if I ask you whether or not you believe something, your answer would come from your conscious mind. You would tell me what you consciously think and or feel about the topic. We’re looking deeper than that though!
In order to change subconscious beliefs, first we need to connect with the subconscious. There are various ways to get under the radar of the conscious mind.Hypnosis is one common way. Muscle testing is another.
Surprisingly, many of the beliefs we hold in our subconscious mind run counter to our conscious way of thinking. Some of them are so extremely different from our conscious thinking that we would argue ad nauseum with ourselves and others that we DO NOT believe that. With muscle testing there is no need to argue, we simply test it.
Why Do My Subconscious Beliefs Matter?
Scientists who study the mind tell us that a minimum of 88 percent and as much as 95 percent of our behavior and the decisions we make stem from the SUBconscious mind. By comparison, the conscious mind only accounts for around 5% of our cognitive activities, like decisions, emotions, actions and behavior.
When we want to change something about ourselves or our lives and it’s easy, that’s an indication that our conscious and subconscious minds are in alignment. When it is somewhere between difficult and seemingly impossible, that’s an indication that our conscious and subconscious minds are out of alignment.
Being able to access the subconscious mind, discover the beliefs you hold there, and release those beliefs which are no longer serving you is one of the fastest ways to support the changes you’re looking to make in your life.

Can I Do Muscle Testing on Myself?
Yes, you can! There are a couple of different ways to do it. My favorite is the loop method.
Method 1: The Loop Method
It’s really easy. With your nondominant hand, make a loop with your thumb and middle finger. Take the index finger of your dominant hand, place the pad of it inside the loop resting where the thumb and middle finger join. Hold your loop well enough that you can pull against it without it immediately breaking open. Great.
Now, with your fingers in position (non-dominant forming loop and dominant index finger ready to pull against the loop) and without looking at your hands, say out loud, “show me a Yes” and then pull against your loop. Then with fingers in place, and without looking at your hands, say out loud, “show me a no” and then pull against your loop
Most likely, when you said ‘yes’ your fingers held strong and when you said ‘no’ your fingers or your loop broke. You can further test your consistency of yes/no by making statements you know the answer to.
For example, “I have 3 heads”, “I have 6 arms”, “I have 2 ears”, “I live in _____ (either state the city/state you live or one that you have never lived), “My name is ______ (either state your name or make one up). The point of these statements is a clear correct answer to validate the yes or no you get from the testing.
If your muscle testing is inconsistent, drink some water as being dehydrated can mess with your results. Taking a few deep breaths and gently tapping your sternum for a minute or two is also helpful.
Once you have established a clean yes and no you can start testing beliefs and discover what’s going on in your subconscious mind!
Some of what you discover in your subconscious mind might not make sense compared to how you consciously think, feel, believe. If you take a moment to compare to how your life is going/feeling, it probably will make sense, very often, a whole lot of sense.
Method 2: Standing
Another method – Standing. Stand with your feet hips width apart. Repeat the statements from above to establish your yes and your no and test for consistency. As you do so, instead of the loop holding or breaking, you feel yourself slightly sway forward or backward.
In standing say, “show me a Yes” and then notice which way your body sways, forward or backward. Then, again in standing, say out loud, “show me a no” and notice which way your body sways.
Most likely, when you said ‘yes’ your body swayed forward and when you said ‘no’ your swayed backward. Remember, it’s important to be well hydrated. If your muscle testing is inconsistent, drink some water. Taking a few deep breaths and gently tapping your sternum for a minute or two is also helpful.
Now you are ready to start testing subconscious beliefs. I like to test “It’s possible” when there is something I want to do or be, it’s really helpful for the subconscious mind to believe it (whatever it might be) is possible. If you like to use affirmations, it’s really fun to test those. Having your subconscious believes in alignment with the affirmations you like to say is really helpful and powerful. Releasing Resentment and Regret is also very powerful. It’s fun to test both recent events as well as past events, take a few deep breaths and ask yourself, “what resentments am I holding onto?” and notice what thoughts, images, memories come to mind. Some of them might seem really insignificant. If they come to mind they are still affecting you. Take another few breaths and ask, “what do I regret?” and notice what thoughts, images, memories come to mind. Worthiness and Deservedness are great topics to work with as well.
Oh Crap! What Do I Do Now That I Have Found Limiting Beliefs?
There are many different ways to work with the subconscious mind and change beliefs. My favorite is ThetaHealing. I’ve been in the healing arts for over 25 years and have taken multitudes of classes and studied many different modalities, always looking to create more efficient and effective sessions for my clients. When I took my first Theta Healing class in 2008 I was blown away by the results my clients were experiencing. ThetaHealing is by far my favorite way of finding and changing subconscious beliefs.
